Nancy Carter, MSW, ACSW

Nancy has been a social worker since 1983 earning her degrees from the Schools of Social Work at both Western Carolina University and the UNC-Chapel Hill. Her love for working with adolescents began as a volunteer at a half-way house and fully developed when she provided direct clinical services to adolescents and their families within a residential setting. Nancy also went on to serve as a clinical social worker in pediatrics at UNC-Hospitals, pregnancy support services, child development, and foster care recruitment and training.

Nancy joined ILR in 1993 as the agency Program Coordinator and in 2005 became the Associate Director. Since joining ILR, Nancy has been instrumental in building the training component for social workers and primary caregivers working with teens in foster care, the youth advocacy organization (Executive Director of SaySo, Inc.), and creating a range of programs, resources, and curriculum used by the NC LINKS program and recognized nationally by a range of youth serving organizations. She regularly presents at both statewide and national independent living and caregiver conferences.

Nancy has also been a trainer for ILR, providing a range of specifically requested topical trainings, a regularly scheduled four-day course, “Putting It Together,” and a two-day seminar on creating Real World Simulation programming for teens . She coordinates the direct programming, training, contract services provided by ILR, and is a member of the research and development teams associated with ILR’s federal grants.
